JUNIOR PLAYER INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION

The junior club caters for children from Year 0 to Year 11, and both boys and girls are encouraged to join and develop their skills in the great game of cricket.  New players are always welcome and we take registrations throughout the season, so if you're new to the area just get in touch and we can find a suitable team for your child / children.

The club is commited to providing a safe and rewarding enviroment for the children where the focus is on fun and good sportsmanship.  Like all team sports, cricket is a great way to develop children's communciation skills, self esteem, self confidence and team work.

Year 0, 1 & 2 - Kiwi Cricket

At this age the focus is on skills development and having fun.  Sessions take place at 5.30pm on a Friday night and the venue rotates throughout the season between the local Counties Manukau clubs.  Sessions usually consist of skills based games and in the 2nd half of the season will start to introduce some mini "cricket games".

Year 3 & 4 - Softball Cricket

Year 3 & 4 children continue to focus on skills development and fun, but are introduced to the fundamental rules of a real cricket game with some amendments to ensure all children are included and have equal opportunity to develop.  Practices happen on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night (depending on the coaches availability).  Teams will either be entered in the Friday night competition where games run on a Friday night from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, or the Saturday morning competition where games run from 9am to 11am.

Year 5, 6 , 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 - Hardball Cricket

From Year 5 onwards, the children are into "proper" cricket with a standard cricket ball.  Games are played on Saturday mornings and increase in length with the age increases.

JUNIOR PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

Something a little different this week with the spotlight falling on an individual player. Daniel Glover is a fast bowler from our Karaka Year 5-6 team. Recently his team was taking part in a closely fought battle against Pukekohe Metro over at Bledisloe Park. Daniel was having a magic spell of bowling with the opposition batters struggling to connect with his consistent line and length. With two balls to go in the over, he sent down an absolute peach of a ball which went straight through the opponents defences, smashing the bail in two, sending the pieces flying (see the attached picture). Daniel is the grandson of Club Patron and Mayor of Karaka, Murray Napier and looks to have a long and exciting career at Karaka Cricket ahead of him.

P.S. We will be sending Napes the bill.
